Upon arrival smoke was found coming from the eaves of the house. When crews made entry heavy smoke was found on the first floor with close to zero visability. After a search for the fire, the fire was found in the basement. Luckily the fire was mostly extinguished by a water pipe that had burnt through. Extensive overhaul was conducted. No firefighters were injured but the homeowners cat perished in the fire.

Another fire on November 2 put station 1 and 2 back to work. This time heavy fire was found on the outside of the house and through the roof. Entry to the house found fire in the attick and around a chimney/fireplace. Extensive overhaul had to be conducted to ensure that all of the hotspots were found and controlled. Units were on scene for approx. 2 hours. Alex was involved in a freak accident on Interstate 40 near Statesville NC around 9pm on Friday night. He was transported to Baptist Critical Care Hospital in Winston Salem NC where he was placed on life support. Family and friends gathered by his side for his last few hours. The difficult decision was made to take him off of life support about 4:30am.
Alex was a well known father, boss, firefighter, and most of all, friend, to many people throughout the state of Virginia and beyond. He has shared his skills with forest firefighting all over the United States throughout the years, and many have learned unforgettable lessons and made great memories that they will put to use everyday and cherish for the rest of their lives.
While we dont know why, we do know that he is up THERE wheeling bulldozers and doing what he loves.
REST EASY ALEX, YOU WILL BE MISSED!

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT's

On Jan 4, 2010 at approx. 10:00 am sta. 1 was dispatched for a MVA in front of Halifax Square Shopping Center. The fire was contained and overhaul was conducted finding a lot of extension in the walls etc.

Help with the site!

If anyone has pictures or anything else they would like me to put on here please send them in. Hi heat conditions made for a difficult attack but the fire was nocked down and held to a back bedroom. Unfortunately the family dog died as a result of smoke inhalation. Units conducted overhaul and cleared.

Tuesday evening at 6 pm station 6 (Turbeville) was alerted for a tractor trailer fire on Hwy 58. Then after lunch it was to the woods, where we practiced cutting firelines, and some got to get hands on time with the bulldozers that are used to cut fire lines on forest fires..

On Sunday we got to the woods, and after safety briefings, giving out equipment, and waiting for the ground to dry, the students took to the cutover area and began burning. It was tough getting the wet ground to burn but a decent fire was started and the land was burned. All 4 of us really learned alot of things, and got to do stuff that we probably wouldn't be able to do anytime else. He also somehow managed to go air borne for a few feet, snap a telephone pole in half, flip the van, and jump the drainage ditch, and came out of it all with just a small scratch on his head.

Last Week

South Boston Fire Fighters were put to work on two working fires last week. The county Fire & EMS agencies stayed quiet, with exception of an outbuilding fire, tree on a vehicle w. occupants trapped, and a possible structure fire. After the storm passed South Boston Fire was dispatched to a vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy. 58 and 360. Upon arrival units found a single car that had hit the traffic light head on. The patient was out of the vehicle and walking around. With a few cuts he refused to go to the hospital, and took a trip to the Halifax Hilton instead. Before we could clear from that wreck another one was dispatched at the intersection of Hwy. 58 and 501. Units were on scene within a minute to find a tractor trailer vs. police car. Heavy damage was done to the police car and moderate damage to the tractor trailer. Police officer was out of the vehicle upon our arrival, and went to HRH to be checked out. Sta 1. units controlled hazards and returned.

Working Fire in Town of Halifax

June 28, at approx. 2100 hrs. station 2 (halifax) was alerted for a commercial structure fire @ the NAPA Auto Parts Store. With units en-route, central advised smoke could be seen from the rear of the structure. With this being noted, Station 1 was added to the run. Halifax first engine arrived, and reported a heavy fire load in the rear and about a 1/4 of the way up the roof, and started a blitz attack. South Bostons Engine arrived and did a reverse lay about 700' down highway 501 to a hydrant and established water supply. A interior attack was made, but with no head way being made the decision was made to pull everyone out and start a defensive attack. Then the ladder pipe and deck guns went into operation. Units were on the scene until approx. 2 am, and had to return the next day to extinguish some hot spots.
When the fire was said and done, Halifax, South Boston, Triangle, and Liberty responded to the scene with manpower and engines.

Pictures will be posted soon, so check back!!

Joint Station Training

On June 20 South Boston Volunteers and Halifax Volunteers held a joint station Vehicle Extrication training. The day was mostly spent doing vehicle stabilization, and scene size ups. Then later in the evening everyone got to experience "tool time" with all of the hydraulic tools, and any other tool they wanted to use.. After all the trucks were put back into service everyone that participated, enjoyed a cook out.
But as luck would have it, about a hour into the eating station 1 was alerted for smoke in a large commercial building. Units responded and had moderate smoke in the office of the industry. A malfunctioning breaker box was the cause, all smoke was cleared and sta. 1 units returned.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352818410786268690" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px;
